Founded in 2002, the Visual Art Critics Union of Minnesota exists to promote the independent voice of the art critic. We believe that art critics are a vital part of any art scene, and of any cultural milieu. Without the critic to interpret and help shape aesthetic discussions in our society we think in time the world becomes a grayer, more drab place; without critics to focus discussion of the arts, artmaking is less valued by its potential audiences. We seek to write intelligently on art, with verve, and on tight deadlines; we support and promote professional development for art critics; and we foster the cause of art criticism in Minnesota and beyond whenever possible. We believe in the power of the collective, and that multiple voices providing thoughtful, reasoned criticism week in and week out is the best way to promote a vibrant cultural life.

We seek opportunities to create new dialogue among artists, arts organizations, editors, the public, and other critics. Contact us about catalogue essays, studio visits, lectures, art reviews, and freelance criticism.

VACUM's membership includes an eclectic group of writers whose criticism appears regularly in local newspapers and magazines, online journals, and in national publications such as Art in America, Artforum, Art Papers, The Bridge, Frieze, Sculpture, and New Art Examiner.

How to become a member:

There are two requirements for VACUM membership: a professional publication record on visual arts of at least "one year," and membership on the VACUM Yahoo group. We need every member to participate in the Yahoo group to facilitate easy communication. There are no dues or attendance requirements to be a member of VACUM.
